NORFOLK, VA –The Port of Virginia’s® continuing focus on moving cargo swiftly, sustainably and safely has earned its second consecutive International Port of the Year award from Lowe’s.

In its evaluation of the port, the Lowe’s team said: “The leadership team continues to provide best-in-class partnership to the BCO [beneficial cargo owner] community including Lowe’s.” And that the port is, “highly engaged and responsive to any opportunity where they can provide additional value supporting our cargo flow.”

Additionally, the port was recognized for proactively monitoring Lowe’s cargo volumes and offering recommendations on optimizing its landside container flow while partnering with the company on data quality and visibility. “The port does a great job turning motor carriers timely and their performance has given us confidence to grow our volumes in their gateway,” the Lowe’s team said.

Lowe’s is a growing user of the port and the company is developing a 1.5 million-square-foot import distribution center in the Virginia Port Logistics Park in Suffolk, VA, near Virginia International Gateway, one of the port’s primary container terminals. The port is investing $1.4 million to expand, modernize and drive efficiency in order to help companies like Lowe’s grow their cargo volumes, said Thomas D. Capozzi, chief sales and marketing officer for Virginia International Terminals LLC., the port’s private operating company.

“This is America’s most modern maritime gateway and we are expanding and modernizing our capabilities to ensure that companies like Lowe’s can grow their volumes here without concern for capacity,” Capozzi said. We are grateful for the trust Lowe’s has put into The Port of Virginia and look forward to a long and collaborative partnership.”
